Di Stefano’s prescient and unique work will appeal to fans of Cybe, Joel Graham, UnknownmiX, Zru Vogue, and provides a fascinating view of the 80s US electronic underground.American-born, Japan-based composer John Di Stefano self-released a number of cassettes as part of the 80s DIY underground on his own imprint Oktron Produktions, including Klang's Drift, a collaboration with Joel Graham.Living in San Francisco, Di Stefano had access to multiple University electronic music studios, where he had an impressive array of synthesizers at his fingertips, including both Buchla and Serge modular systems. Combining his knowledge of modular synthesis with a background in percussion, his early releases were a uniquely human approach to electroacoustic music, with flourishes of post punk in the mix. Di Stefano developed an interest in world music, studying Indian music theory and tabla, and after an extended trip to Indonesia in the mid 80s, he was particularly drawn to Javanese gamelan music. Future recordings would forever be indebted to the sounds he heard during those travels.

Les principaux intéressés, Anne, Mathias et Manuel, non plus. Quelle réponse donner à une telle épreuve ?Sur les contours du deuil, la vie s’écoule, et en rejouant de la musique à trois, une évidence s’imposait : c’était la même sève incandescente qui pulsait entre eux, celle qui irriguait les sillons de leurs deux précédents disques, celle qui fascinait le public à chacun de leur concert et en faisait des événements. Et avec elle, vint l’envie de se remettre à l’ouvrage et de se lancer dans un troisième disque.Alors que l’album a pour titre un vers tiré d’un haïku ('la consolation des violettes'), cette forme poétique à la brièveté radicale, il choisit à l’inverse de s’étirer, de s'affranchir des contraintes du simple vinyle et de pleinement déployer ses ailes pour atteindre une envergure inédite.Quand le haïku peut se déclamer en un souffle, la musique de Rien Virgule en déchaîne une multitude, façonnée par les parcours de ses membres qui, à la manière de White Noise, ont longtemps louvoyé dans des pratiques expérimentales avant de livrer leur vision très personnelle de la pop.On prend toute la mesure de l'ambition du groupe qui sur cette durée peut enfin mêler, grâce à une véritable science de la narration, des morceaux écrits où on jurerait apercevoir les volutes mélodiques d’un Robert Wyatt, à d’autres issus de séances totalement improvisées. Here is a portal to a vast and relatively unknown world, the Japanese cyber-occult underground media scene of the early 1990s; our guide is the late Henry Kawahara, a media artist and electronic music producer whose expansive and visionary conception of digital technology merged with a desire to break free of the constraints of mere rationality. This collection, the first-ever archival release of his work, is drawn from recordings released during the period 1991-1996, an exceptionally fertile time for Kawahara. Originally released on CD by a few Japanese independent labels including Hachiman Publishing, a cyber-occult/new-age book specialist, the releases were available mainly in book stores, so this sumptuous and prescient music has remained relatively unknown. The original titles and tag lines of the CDs give clues about Kawahara’s interests and the music itself: Digital Mushroom, Subtropical Illusion, Never-ending Asia, and so on. This 15-track gateway compilation is available on double 12” vinyl and DL; the CD version has two extra discs featuring sound from two art installations entitled "Dysteleology - α" and "Dysteleolog - β" from the 1990s. All formats feature extensive English liner notes.
