from the artist's bandcamp: Over the course of nearly a decade of releases, Szarehave have been a mainstay of UK dance music, cementing their reputation through a string of essentialreleases for labels like Horizontal Ground, Idle Hands,Field, Project 13 and Different Circles. We’re extremelyproud to add another name to that list, with this diverse selection of tracks that comprise both new ideas and forgotten loops, re-visited and re-tooled.The first track, Miner, is named after a street in Downtown Stockton, CA. Whilst Miner isn’t directly about the Central Valley of California, the juxtaposed rhythmic and thematic iterations that outline its structure reflect the uncanny incongruence of the environmentthat birthed it. From the opening bar, the rhythms are pounding, frenetic, and totally unhinged… We won’t give away the payoff though; listen to the tune.Cut with Glass - written after a recycling mishap - perfectly encapsulates a vintage side of the Szare sound - minimal, free from ornamentation, and with an approach to uk sound system culture that exhibits a more westward-gazing sound palette than initially meets theeye.Drop Shadow rounds off the package; as much an exploration of concrète as it is bass music, the drop to 100bpm facilitates one of the most controlled and perfectly executed arrangements we’ve ever heard out of Szare. The spasms of noise throughout are used as a fundamental instrument, complimented by pointillist licks of dubbed out vocals andstrings that reach a fever-pitch in the closing third.
hellosQuare: ...Agency's stream of consciousness art-punk might seem miles away from their previous and parallel bands - A Drone Coda, Hoodlum Shouts and Spartak - but the influences that have always been in the background come to the fore with this piece of power pop in the style of Husker Dü and The Stooges on this debut single. On the flipside, Assad (Ben Andrews from My Disco/Agents Of Abhorrence) pulls apart an Agency instrumental and sets it adrift in a wash of Islamic prayer calls and Jakarta street sounds.
t would be insufficient to call Rory McPike “prolific”; it does a disservice to the depth and breadth of his oeuvre as Rings Around Saturn, Cactus Head, Bleekman, 2200, Dan White, and as one half of Turner St Sound. His work can be broken into a litany of different genres, but at the heart of it all lies an endlessly explorative spirit with a restless desire for expression. This impulse spans his diverse body of work and all the different facets of his musical practice.‘All Things Shining’ touches on ambient, electroacoustic studies and filmic/VGM composition, but outside of these references, it stands as a beautiful suite of songs and a testament to the power of the creative impulse. Best Effort is proud to present the realization of Rory's vision.
Dear listener,On behalf of re:discovery records, it is with great excitement that we announce the reissue of 'Synaesthetic' by A Positive Life. A seminal release that became beloved by their owners but somehow slipped thru the cracks on recognition on both sides of the Atlantic. The album Is chalk full of top-notch tracks in this style. It features the magical Orb-esque single 'The Calling', which helped show the way forward to a deeper meaning in electronic music while the amazing 'Pleidean Communication', took this journey even deeper. 'Spacehopper' & 'Bathtub' latched on to the growing trance sound of the time but as you can hear, they are prime examples at ones that were successful at not going overboard but kept the sound timeless with a less is more approach. 'Aquasonic' is a classic in the ambient dub scene that concludes this album on a memorable note. A special treat to this reissue is that we included 'Warehouse 5am', which was only featured on the American cd version. Originally released in 1994 and having recently grown a warranted cult status as copies became hard to secure for a reasonable value, we are happy to present this in a beautiful package with no expense sacrificed. It is our hope that they bring you as much happiness as they have brought us and that this release gives them new life to a new audience and a special fond memory to those that knew them."Once upon a time there was a young man.rough at the edges but with stars in his eyes"Synaesthetic : A sonic love letter to the years of Acid House, Chemistry, Science, inner space, love, friendship and journeys into the Ultraworld..Be a light in the darknessStay highFind the "others"Lifer x"i(signature)Stefan PierlejewskiCommand Pilot - rd004Pathways : Jarre.
