juno.co.uk: ...Athens of the North serves up something of a lovely curveball here with their first-ever beat tape. It is the work of Scottish beatmaker and hip-hop producer Jaisu, who has long been a friend of the label. He crafted this record in his studio in Niddrie from beats already put out on the Athens label. In loading up his MPC with such great source material, he was always sure to serve up some great sounds and so it is - these are lived-in, real, raw beats that have lo-fi fringes, soul vibes and a certain sense of timelessness that stands each track apart. More, please!
Africa Seven: ...The Afro National band was formed in Freetown, Sierra Leone in 1972. Their inspirational leader, Sulay Abu Bakarr accompanied by his wife Patricia and Ayo Roy Macauley split from the Sabanoh Jazz Band to form their new group. They skillfully merged highlife and jazz sounds with a deep knowledge of West African sounds. Growing to become one of the premiere bands to emerge from Sierra Leone they not only defined the sound of the country for a generation but also crafted some of the country's most popular and memorable songs (for example Sonjo which is included on this collection).
Hopestreet Recordings: ...The Putbacks – Melbourne’s dirtiest, darkest and heaviest funk rhythm section – bring you an album of crunchy post-soul post-jazz mystery-cinema instrumentals for your turntable and your sampler. Produced by Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote) and featuring collaborations with luminaries such as Bilal and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, this record is a hard-hitting, abstract journey into an alternate reality where The Meters specialised in Sci-Fi soundtrack art and Dick Dale played guitar on Madlib records. Known for their instrumental 7inch funk cuts and their collaboration with Emma Donovan, this self-titled LP is the first full-length release to the band’s name and is well worth the wait.
P-Vine: ..."Vibraphone" double cider, of course, super rare, which combines the finest mellowness of Roy Ayers and the local jazz-funk manners of Billy Wooten, and is quietly left in the rare groove important area = New Jersey! !!Rare groove important area = New Jersey-based vibraphonist Ted Coleman released in 1980, a phantom debut album that is also called the highest peak of hidden rare groove! "Maestro" Roy Ayers' vibes touch is softer and mellow, and Ted's unbearable play is a masterpiece of all songs original! Especially the vocal songs are wonderful, and it is convincing that the soft vibes and tight drums associated with Ted's tasty singing have captivated top collectors around the world who are aiming for the local unexplored board of US minor jazz. Probably the correct rare groove manners! "Jake is sober"? No, heaven will come only to those who sniff out this rare groove odor and pick it up, and if they pass by, they will regret it for the rest of their lives. That's what the diggers road is all about!
