boomkat: ...Properly overdue reissue of Hydroplane's long out of print 1997 debut album, a beguiling concoction of lo-fi pop, shoegaze, early electronic blips and billowing ambience. So good!Back in 1997, Aussie jangle pop outfit The Cat's Miaow formed Hydroplane after their drummer headed to London. They filled the gap by using samples and tape loops, and developed a startling new sound that gave a new resonance to Kerrie Bolton's cool, deadpan vocals and the band's hybrid experimentation. The self-titled album works because it refuses to stay in the same spot for too long, lurching from bit-crushed breaks and dry guitar plucks on opening track 'Wurlitzer Jukebox' to mucky noise and regurgitated piano guts on 'Piano Movement with Percussion', before settling into a dream pop groove on the beatless 'Song for the Meek'.The album's best moments though are when they ignore songs altogether, like on the sci-fi tinted analog synth jam 'I Hear a New World', or 'House Warming', a ghostly spoken word track accompanied by a wavering electronic drone. The band recorded this material in their Brunswick flat using a bare-bones setup including a Jupiter 4 synth, sampler and tape equipment, and the album was released at the time only in the US on CD. Now it's available again, it feels like high time to rediscover a band that nestle comfortably between Slowdive, Stereolab and Hood.
P-Vine: ...The world's first LP reissue of the finest Lady Soul board FAY "This Is A Blessing", which has never been reissued since its original release in 1981!Full of killer tunes such as "I Don't Know", a city soul produced by "Spread Love" MICHAEL ORR, which is familiar even with that "witch" jacket! The original is extremely rare! !!Fay Hill, a female singer who has been based in LA since the 1980s, is an artist known for her 2nd album "Island In My Mind", which was released in 1987 and appointed professional musicians and engineers from LA. , The 1st album released in 1981, this work is a superb lady soul with powerful vocals and a sound full of city feeling!Among them, the city soul "I Don't Know" (M5), which is produced by MICHAEL ORR, who is familiar with the rare groove scene, and the guitar cutting at the beginning is too comfortable, is an exaggeration to say that it is the highlight of this work. There will be no.Furthermore, the world's first LP full of killer tunes such as "I Know Who You Should See" (M2) and "Any Load You Can Handle" (M7), which were single-cut at 7 inches at that time and are still premiered. It's a reissue!
Australia's answer to Syd Barrett, with a VU-style side from from 1968, and a solo home-cassette-recording from thirty years later.
Lacklustre Records: ...Brisbane's Make More are without a doubt the finest indie pop band this side of the equator. Refreshing, clear and pure guitar pop. There is a familiar warmth behind each track, so much so that by the end of the full length LP you're listening to, it'll be like walking out from your favourite sauna.
Efficient Space: ...Efficient Space continues to expose Australia’s esoteric musical history with Oz Waves - a collection of 80s DIY recordings, compiled by odd wave anthropologist Steele Bonus. Definitive proof that inhabitants of the Down Underground were links in a global network of creative kooks, Oz Waves connects those who utilised mobile recording rigs and small press releases to create and disseminate misfit synth-punk, tape loop experiments and inner city pop. Through overseas mail order exchanges, anonymous groups like Zerox Dreamflesh could find place on Belgian compilations, while Chris and Cosey lullabied their son to sleep with Irena Xero and her interdisciplinary art collective Zip.

Bonus selects 10 survivors from this fertile period (1982-1989), most of which were only issued on cassette in tiny editions of 5 to 100 copies. M Squared affiliates Prod join the extraterrestrial Software Seduction, minimal wave neglect from He Dark Age and the irreverent cut ups of The Horse He's Sick and MK Ultra & the Assassins of Light. The remaining tracks have been sourced from musicians’ private archives and are being officially released on Oz Waves for the first time - Andy Rantzen’s industrial dub Itch-E & Scratch-E precursor, the buoyant vocal-drone of Ironing Music and Moral Fibro, Sydney’s short lived answer to Weekend and Marine Girls. With detailed track by track notes, lines are drawn to Severed Heads, Scattered Order and other antipodean post-punk royalty.

As a DJ, Steele Bonus has gained notoriety via the exquisite selections that form his ongoing mix series Odd Waves. Sydney-born, Amsterdam-based, his graphic design has not only been responsible for sleeves on Efficient Space, but also trusted Amsterdam connoisseurs Music From Memory and Young Marco’s Safe Trip.
