Downundaground II is the second instalment in a series spotlighting producer-driven, electronically shaped instrumental music emerging from Australia’s evolving music scene.Where Swing on Low draws from spiritual jazz, avant-garde, and neo-classical traditions — balancing improvisation and composition — Downundaground shifts focus to producers and instrumentalists exploring rhythm and texture through electronic tools, carving out new spaces between genres and machines. The compilation brings together an eclectic group of artists shaping the next phase of Australia’s underground, assembled through a casual callout posted to Instagram. What began as a light experiment in reach and community quickly became a flood of submissions from across the country — spanning close collaborators and complete unknowns (to us), crossing cities, scenes, and styles. The result is a snapshot of a sprawling, self-organising network united by curiosity, rhythm and a shared impulse to explore. The first Downundaground, released in 2019, introduced several artists who’ve since become mainstays in their respective scenes. This second chapter builds on that foundation, affirming the depth, vitality, and openness of what’s still to come.Thank you to everyone who submitted and to all who listen and continue to support local music.
The Psychedelic Freaks is a new alias of Horatio Luna's. The aptly titled debut LP 'Passing Through The Doorways Of Your Mind' is an introspective 70s fusion space odyssey. An Afrobeat, Psychedelic jazz, funk fusion experience inspired by the Miles Davis's electric era. Influenced by the genius of Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Dave Holland, Paul Jackson, Carol Kaye, Jimmy Hendrix, James Brown, and Alice Coltrane.Special thanks to Mandarin Dreams for putting a guitar in my hands and On-Ly for putting a wah pedal in front of it.
From Godriguez:Meditations is GODTET diving into our own minds, journeying together, by ourselves to where we wanted at the time to go.. There was a definite sense of wanting to abandon (albeit all unspoken) any of GODTET’s previous vibes and any other musical contexts we all often exist in. It is definitely a world where we, the musicians, can create a starting point and see where our minds take us. We wait either for ourselves or each other to see where we’d like to journey (or not journey) at all and be happy to sit put in one place for a while. The Meditations are almost a reaction; A protest? - To having to do the normal thing as musicians we’re expected to do (Make a big good exciting thing now!) If anything it's a blueprint for the future of the GODTET “sound”, it is to be unexpected. “Expect the unexpected” is quite the cliche yet it’s probably the most fitting for what I foresee the GODTET future as sounding. Unbound by any expectations or contexts or having to repeatedly play music in any certain way - it feels almost like a manifestation of our freedom and personal agent to not be beholden to anything as musicians.Meditations is the most open statement and platform GODTET has produced to date. Wiping the slate clean, this erasure allows us infinite possibilities.. Anywhere and everywhere to go from here... To be definable or restricted is the antithesis of what GODTET is about. GODTET PLAYS FOR ITSELF. Our own curiosity, pleasure, introspection, play, ourselves.
Pierre Bujeau is an expert at creating temporary escape zones - musical structures to evade the everyday. Sometimes he works collectively as part of the mysterious French groups Omertà and Tanz Mein Herz. But it’s when he’s on his own, performing as Megabasse, that he offers the most complete break from reality. His kit is simple: a few bottles of cheap lager, twin Fender amps, and his double-necked guitar. An instrument like this normally signals maximum rockist excess - think Jimmy Page, Geddy Lee, or that dude from the Eagles. In Pierre’s hands, it becomes more like a zither or a dulcimer, producing soft chiming patterns that build against themselves until the sound of the room, passed back and forth between his two amps, starts to blur everything, and we are away in another world. Wait, though - let down your yoga bun and don’t light the palo santo yet. The new space he creates has nothing to do with smug wellness. It’s a rough, do-it-yourself psychedelia, scuffed but hopeful. Not a perfect blank space to be your best self in, but instead a communal dreaming, an uncanny place where all are welcome.Until now, without catching him live, the Megabasse experience has been difficult to find: CD-Rs, short-run tapes, and one blink-and-you-missed-it LP. Thankfully, this record on Efficient Space, a... morecreditsreleased March 28, 2025Recorded in November 2023 with D'Incise at the Pacheco' Chapel,BrusselsTracks originally released on cassette via MascarponeDiscos, 2024Mixed by Guilhem LacrouxMastered by Mikey YoungOriginal woodcut by Valentin CaponyDesign by Steele Bonus
