hellosQuare: ...Pushing further than his initial beat scene influences with a sharp focus on strong songwriting, LP's marriage of punchy edits and sonic detail weave the analog melodies and sampled sounds around the structures to create a beautifully textured production.Conceived and recorded in various spaces around Canberra before being brought to life by guitar'n'glitch musician Reuben Ingall, LP also features the saxophone sounds of free improvisor Andrew Fedorovitch (Splinter Orchestra) while label boss Shoeb Ahmad provides vinyl textures and additional production across the record.
boomkat: ...As the artist acknowledges, “there’s a lot of serendipity involved in wrestling grooves out of these awkward machines”, and that’s where a lot of the chewy charm to ‘Pink Nothing’ stems from. Working with his re-imagined version of Daphne Oram’s uncompleted “Mini Oramics” machine - a slightly less unwieldy version of her drawing/light-to-sound interface for music making - which he finished in 2016, Tom harnesses its bleeps and whistles to palpitating bass drums owing to modern dance music, dreaming of what Daphne might have come up with if, as rumours imply, she really was at the first Shoom party.
This sizzling collection, which originally came out in 1977, features renowned conga player Francisco Aguabella on 11 solid Latin-influenced funk and soul tracks. The talented vocalists (male and female leads) are as contagious as the energetic rhythms. "Ramon's Desire," "Don't Let Them Fool You" (featuring wah-wah guitar licks), "I Wanna Know," "Fantasy" (a bender), and the silky "Image of a Star" are gems.
