Hybrid Man - Shapeshifting | Butter Sessions (BSR036)

BUTTER SESSIONS: ....The project of Julien Huynh and Will Holden, Hybrid Man returns after releasing four spacious cuts of downtempo breaks and house in 2019. This time debuting on Butter Sessions, the tracks on Shapeshifting feel like a natural progression, equally well-crafted with the DJ in mind but with a slightly more trance influenced modus operandi.

Opening with ‘Virtual Language’, the duo seemingly nods in the direction of Richard H. Kirk’s seminal Virtual State album, inspired by the futurism and warm robotic soundscapes of the 90s ambient techno scene. Dub FX and swirling basslines underpin the stylistic make-up of the EP, sharp breaks on the title track recalling 5AM catharsis in a pre-lockdown state of loved up rave bliss.

Seance Centre: ...Muldrew, recorded on the northern Ontario lake by that name, is the culmination of several years of this collaborative tradition. Resisting their penchant for composition and arrangement, the duo embarked on this project with only an open framework that encouraged restraint. The result is a sparse and improvisational album, hung on enough structure for each song to evoke a distinct, albeit ambiguous mood. Space is paramount and even the most digital elements breathe with the resonance of the room and mingle with creaking floors. The resulting album is steeped in the placid stillness and northern ambience of a lake at dawn, and the emotive expanse of a forest at dusk. Imagine an ECM cottage-series, or Jon Hassell, Hiroshi Yoshimura, and John Martyn scoring a Bela Tarr film set in rural Canada. This is the future-proof music of metropolitan polyglot minds invigorated by nature’s mute refusal to follow a click-track.
from the artist's bandcamp: ...QUEER + BLACK is an exploration of identity, both personal and political, it is a deft combination of sharp hooks and splintering beats beamed in from a club in 3021 AD.The EP is a fierce opening statement from an artist that manages to interrogate sexuality (“Sticky”), society (“Fuck Ur Landlord”) and race (“Black”) all within the space of 5 exhilarating tracks. It’s a bold introduction from an artist with even more to say.Grove is a Bristol-based vocalist, producer and DJ. Their music combines ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ energies that reside within them as a genderqueer individual, filtering them through an innovative, sensuous & rave-inspired sound.
Sia Ahmad returns with A Body of Full Of Tears, the Canberra sound artist’s first new work as Shoeb Ahmad since “quiver” (2018) and their departure from critically-acclaimed jazz ensemble Tangents.Where “quiver” embodied themes of dysphoria and identity with a soul-pop conceit, ABFOT dives headfirst into the tumult beneath waves of distorted sound, obscuring Ahmad’s foundational songwriting in the process. It’s the cathartic din of an artist rediscovering the expressive and electronic elements of their early practice, marked by a period of deep isolation where questions of artistic and familial identity prevailed. All profits from sales go towards ongoing contributions made to Aboriginal Legal NSW/ACT and Pay The Rent.
ELEGAL: ...For the fourth installment of the ELEGAL RECORDS sub-label, Klasse Wrecks is happy to present 4 different versions of a track that originally came out in 1993. Produced by the South London duo Aura (Gary Folgate and Dave Tutt), the track featured on an EP of the same name and was originally released by Infectious Records. Now specially remastered and remixed for 2022, the record comes with new versions from original group member Electron Forest (Dave Sage) and label regulars Luca Lozano and DJ Steve. The original tracks parts are picked apart in the new remixes, most making weighty use of the signature pipe drum melody (which was originally made by hitting lengths of plastic pipe with table tennis bats). Electron Forest turns in a wonderfully produced version, this is modern Trance with stylish elements perfectly executed. Luca Lozano provides what is now expected from the producer, a stomping breakbeat-led groover that introduces new vocals to peak the interested while DJ Steve turns in an ever impressive and original sounding Bleep-Techno interpretation, replaying the original parts with new synthesizers providing the tunes.
